How to Transform Your Glossy Lipstick Into Matte, According to a MUASeptember 26, 2018
We know we don’t need to remind you, but glossy lips were a major makeup trend during summer 2018. Those who wanted more than just a coat of a clear shimmery formula may have opted for a glossy lipstick like Maybelline Shine Compulsion or L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Shine — if you’re anything like us you may own a casual five or six different shades. But now that we’ve officially made it to fall and are more ready than ever to embrace a fall mani paired with a matte lip that matches our ideal fall aesthetic. So before you run to your nearest Ulta store with your latest paycheck at the ready, let us propose a makeup hack that might just change your life. In just a few easy steps, you can transform your shiny lipstick into matte lipstick — no impressive DIY skills necessary.
We had a chance to speak with Dermablend makeup artist and licensed beauty educator Andrew Velazquez to find out how to get the look in time for fall. “I do this all the time,” Velazquez excitedly expressed after we asked him to share how to DIY the look at home. Ahead, he explains how to make this magic happen.
“Use two lip liners: a darker one to define and contour the lip and a lighter one to blend away the edges of the dark line,” Velazquez explains. “Then, use a shield like a tissue and pat eyeshadow or blush (in the same color) on top of your cream lipstick. Pat eyeshadow or blush on top of that in the same color to make it not only a matte finish, but also to intensify the saturation of the color to make it look even richer and last longer.”
And if you’re looking for a video that shows you how it’s done IRL, check out this tutorial from makeup artist and beauty influencer Stephanie Lange. She opts for a similar method to Velazquez’s tips, except she uses translucent powder instead of eyeshadow and applies it to her lips with a makeup brush, keeping a tissue shield over her lips as she does so.
