If you’ve yet to see Lupita Nyong’o’s look from last night’s Met Gala, please take a seat before you do. The Us actress took over the pink carpet with her appropriately campy ensemble and we, her humble audience, were shook. Her hair-raising look drew inspiration from iconic drag-queen and actress Divine, who was known for her thin, drawn-on eyebrows and larger-than-life personality. The look was inspired specifically by films created with longtime collaborator John Waters, says makeup artist Nick Barose, who was responsible for her scene-stealing beat. That explains the cartoonish eyebrows, glitter and over-the-brow-bone eyeshadow, complete with an ultra-graphic cat eye. It was all drama, all camp, and very, very Divine. “I’m not doing it for fashion tonight” said Barose, “I’m doing it for Divine (and John Waters!).” To get the look, Barose used over 20 products — almost half of which were used on the eyes alone. Nyong’o’s shadow was a combination of Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Stylo Shadow Sticks in the shades 32 Onyx and 27 Bronze, which Barose used on the outer corners, in the crease, and all over the lids and brow bone. In the center of the lid and the inner corner came Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Stylo Shadow Stick in 34 Monogold, which created a smooth base for the heaps of glitter to follow. To complete the look, Barose used Lancôme Artliner in Noir to trace over the pencil liner and give the eye added dimension before popping on individual lashes and layering Lancôme Hypnose Doll Lashes Mascara in Black for added drama. Nyong’o’s lips had a moment of their own as well, with Barose pairing Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil in Aubergine — a deep plum shade — with Lancôme Lancôme L’Absolu Lacquer Gloss in 490 Not Afraid for added shine. Although we likely won’t be rocking this look to the grocery store anytime soon, we’re now inspired to do it for Divine every once in a while, too.
