Like many themed makeup looks, holiday beats can get redundant. Sure, we *swoooon* over a gorgeous red manicure and killer cat eye, but we definitely yearn for more creativity in the lash and lip department. To mix it up a bit we called in one of our favorite makeup artists on the gram, Anne Kohlhagen, and had her create three monochrome makeup looks that we challenge you to rock at your next holiday soirée.

Frosty Blue

Blue doesn’t immediately scream holiday, which is why we love this frosty color for a more avant-garde choice. Here, after applying a coat of black mascara and letting it dry, Kohlhagen went in with YSL Mascara Vinyl Couture in I’m The Trouble on a painting brush. “The black coat gets your lashes where you want them to be, and then you can go in with the color so that it stands out,” says Kohlhagen. For this look, she finished off the lip with another cobalt blue product, a touch of NYX Wicked Lippie Lipstick in Envy.

Hot Red

When it comes to a red lash and lip, Kohlhagen recommends keeping the rest of the face bare. “As far as the skin, keep everything neutral since this is such a big look so the eye and lip really pop,” she adds. Another little MUA trick involves using an actuals SFX paint on the lashes as opposed to mascara — like the NYX Professional Makeup Primal Color in Hot Red. Simply brush this onto the top and underside of your lashes for a flaming finish, and complete the look with a classic red like Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro Liquid Lipstick in 401.

Endless Evergreen

The last monochrome look Kohlhagen created for us is this gorgeous evergreen color on the lashes and lips. After using the YSL Mascara Vinyl Couture in I’m The Excitement on the lashes, she prepped the lips with a base color. “I think starting with a pencil to fill and define the lips works best — it can even be an eye pencil,” she notes. To complete the final lip look, Kohlhagen started with a coat of Urban Decay Vice Lipstick in Hawkeye and topped it off with a touch of NYX Professional Makeup Strictly Vinyl Lip Gloss in Bad Seed.
