Wearing a lip product through a meal is the ultimate test of its staying power. Take a big bite and you’ll quickly find out how long-wearing a lipstick or gloss is. A product is held in our highest esteem if it doesn’t budge at all during a meal, but we still award points to a product that fades nicely, i.e. it doesn’t get all over our face or fork throughout the process. It’s only the lippies that have passed this test that we’d even consider wearing during the meal of meals: Thanksgiving dinner.

Here, we’re sharing our top lip picks for Thanksgiving 2020, from a completely smudge-proof liquid lipstick to a barely-there lip serum.

IT Cosmetics Pillow Lips Solid Serum in Like a Dream

Because of COVID-19, my Thanksgiving will be a small and relaxed event this year, so I’m not even going to attempt to wear a bright matte lipstick to dinner. Instead, I’ll be reaching for this tinted lip serum from IT Cosmetics. The hydrating, glossy formula melts right into skin giving me a my-lips-but-better kind of look. It’s pigmented enough to give my lips a pretty wash of color, yet subtle enough that if it comes off in between bites of mashed potatoes and stuffing, no one will notice, and I won’t have to worry about reapplying in between courses. — Sarah, senior editor

Thrive Causemetics Pumpkin Spice Latte Liquid Balm Lip Treatment

One of my tricks for not filling up too much on appetizers and snacks before a big Thanksgiving feast is to swipe on a flavored lip gloss. I find that if I have something on my lips that smells and tastes like dessert, I’m less tempted to overindulge before it’s time for the real deal. This year, I’m turning to this liquid lip balm that tastes ever-so-slightly like a PSL to keep my cravings in check — and my lips hydrated — until the actual pumpkin pie is served. Maybelline New York Super Stay Matte Ink Coffee Edition In Caramel Collector

No matter what Thanksgiving it is (even pre-COVID), I always opt for the tried-and-true Super Stay Matte Ink liquid lipstick. This stuff won’t come off on your mask and won’t come off while you eat. It’s totally budge-proof, super pigmented, saturated and doesn’t feel too cakey on the lips. This year, I’ll be rocking the festive, burnt orange shade Caramel Collector from the new Coffee Edition collection. It practically screams Turkey Day.  — Alanna, associate editor

YSL Beauty Tatouage Couture Velvet Cream Liquid Lipstick in Beige Underground

When it’s Thanksgiving, my attention is all on the food — not my makeup. Because I’ll be shamelessly obsessing over the apple pie all night long, I can’t be bothered with reapplying my lipstick. The good news? This YSL lip stain has major staying power and will last through my entire feast. It feels super lightweight and extremely hydrating for a matte lippie. My go-to shade is Beige Underground, which is surprisingly more of a bright pink, because it instantly brightens up my makeup look and puts me in a festive mood.  — Sam, assistant editor

Tower28 ShineOn Milky Lip Jelly Gloss

I’m a glossy girl through and through, so even though I know it won’t last through Thanksgiving dinner, I have no problem applying and reapplying the Tower28 Milky Lip Jelly in Cashew. I love this formula because it’s so moisturizing and feels like a balm, which is exactly what my dry lips need during this time of year. It also has an incredible glossy finish, and the shade Cashew is the perfect nude to top off any makeup look. — Genesis, assistant editor
