Pinterest is a fascinating place. It’s our spot for meal prep inspiration, a goldmine full of DIY face mask ideas and our future wedding planner — all in one. In addition to this randomly diverse range of topics, it’s also the place we go to for inspiration for buzzy beauty trends, i.e. how to wear eye gloss without looking like we tried too hard or how to turn our loose glitter pigment into an editorial, foiled eyeshadow look. With 2019 rapidly approaching, we figured it would be wise to reflect back on the biggest Pinterest beauty trends of 2018, along with our predictions for what trends are going to stay and what ones are going to go in 2019.

Ahead, check out five trends from 2018 and how we predict they will change in 2019.

Glossy Makeup … More Glossy Makeup

If you’re anything like us, you typed “glossy makeup” into the Pinterest search bar at least 10 times over the course of the year. According to Pinterest (and our personal inklings), glossy makeup isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. We’re certainly bringing the trend (and our hoard of lip glosses) with us straight into 2019 and beyond.

Coffin Nails … Almond Nails

Looking for nail inspiration? Pinterest is your go-to spot, whether you’re looking for nail art ideas or insight into new acrylic nail shapes. In 2018, a search for “acrylic nails” lent itself to tons of coffin nail designs (aka, an oval mani with a square tip). But now, Pinterest predicts that almond nails are The Next Big Thing. Searches for the nail shape are up +97%, which means you can consider your first nail appointment of 2019 pre-planned. In addition to almond nails, you should also plan to see an uptick in ombré nails and dip powder nails.

Lip Gloss … Lip Color

As far as we’re concerned, you don’t need to swap out your lip gloss for a bold lippie. Instead, you just need to make room for both. Beauty lovers are searching for “standout lip color” on Pinterest, so frequently that it’s up 467%. Take a look at the search results, and you’ll see that many people are pairing bold lip color with minimal face makeup. Our predictions? Lip gloss on low-maintenance days and bold lip color on extra-fuss days.

Glitter Makeup … Foiled Eyeshadow

Everyone from minimalists to maximalists took part in the glitter revolution of 2018. Minimalist makeup trendsetters wore just tiny touch of glitter on their bare nails or lined their upper lash line with a touch of silver glitter liner, while maximalists debuted glitter lips and blown out glitter eyeshadow. The good news is that you don’t have to ditch your supply of multipurpose glitter in the new year. “Foil eyeshadow” is up in Pinterest search by 169%. We predict that 2019 will be more about fusing bold color and gloss, but there will always be room for glitter.

Purple Makeup … Living Coral Makeup

Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2018 was Ultra Violet, which led to a blow-up of purple inspired beauty looks on Pinterest — especially in the areas of purple hair and purple eyeshadow. The color is still cool and wearable in the New Year, but you might want to start coveting some new shades inspired by the Pantone Color of the Year for 2019: Living Coral.
