Hot take: Plain matte lipstick is kinda over in our opinion. Instead, we’re reaching for glowy matte lipsticks for this season that feature the color payoff of a matte lipstick but with a radiant finish. Lucky for us, YSL Beauty just dropped an Illicit Nudes collection, which includes 12 fall-appropriate shades of the new Rouge Pur Couture The Slim Glow Matte Lipsticks. Ahead, five of our editors put the luminous lippies to the test.

Shade: 214 Private Carmine

I’m all about comfort these days, from my clothing to my makeup. That’s why I’ve been searching for lipsticks with a matte-like finish that don’t feel heavy and drying. This YSL formula fits the bill. The creamy lippie glides on and feels moisturizing, while offering a luminous matte finish. This red in particular is super striking, and because the texture isn’t flat — the formula contains pearls to give it a glow — it even looks great over video chat. The square shape of the bullet took a second to get used to, but now I love how easy it is to achieve a precise application.

Shade: 212 Equivocal Brown

The first thing I noticed about the Slim Glow Matte was how easy it swiped on; it didn’t feel as heavy, cakey or dry as matte lipsticks often do. Instead, it went on as easily as a balm or gloss without any finessing required. Once on, I really loved how pigmented the shade is. A little product instantly transformed my lips into a stunning red with brown undertones, a color you might see on the set of some cool film noir movie.

Shade: 203 Restricted Pink

It’s no secret that I have a love affair with nude lipsticks — and this new YSL lippie has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. Even though the lipstick is technically matte, it has a super creamy, hydrating feel and gives a soft, velvet-like glow when applied. While the formula is amazing, the color is what really hooked me. Restricted Pink is truly the perfect pink. It looks like a played-up version of my natural lip color and brightens my entire complexion in a single swipe. To say I’m obsessed with this pinky-nude would be an understatement.

Shade: 209 Furtive Caramel

I live for glowing makeup products and never turn down a good nude lipstick, so to say I’m obsessed with this new YSL lippie feels like an understatement. First things first, the glow-matte formula is super innovative and really delivers. It’s soft and creamy but doesn’t budge, similar to a matte lipstick. It’s also so lightweight that it feels like I’m not wearing anything on my lips. IThe glow it provides is really subtle and more like a sheen than a sparkle. I chose the shade Furtive Caramel, which is a stunning toffee nude with warm pink undertones, and I will most definitely be reaching for it all year.

Shade: 205 Secret Rosewood

TBH, I had never seen a “glowy matte” lipstick until I tried this one. Before I get into the formula, though, I have to talk about the packaging. This slim and square-shaped lipstick is beautifully crafted, making it perfect for Instagram selfies. Beyond that, my favorite thing about this lipstick is that unlike other matte lipsticks that make my lips feel dry, flaky and chapped, this one feels so smooth and moisturizing! I tested the Secret Rosewood shade, which is a burnt reddish burgundy color that feels so right for fall and winter.
